These planes carry a medium amount of bombs. They also fly medium distances. We use this name to tell them apart from other planes. Light bombers carry about one ton of bombs. Medium bombers carry about two tons. Heavy bombers carry four tons or more.

Many of these planes were made for World War II. In the early 1930s, air forces wanted new planes. They moved away from old biplanes. Most new designs had two engines. They were often made of metal. This helped them fly fast. Fast speeds helped them avoid fighter planes. Some planes were made from old airliners.

After the war, the term changed. New planes were much better. Some planes did the same jobs. But people called them tactical bombers instead.

In the 1950s, the U.S. used the name again. They used it to group different jet planes. This helped them tell the B-47 from the B-52. The B-52 was a very large heavy bomber.
