Aerial warfare is the use of flying machines in war. Many different types of aircraft can be used for this. Some planes are bombers that attack specific targets or groups of troops. Other planes are fighters that battle to control the airspace. Attack aircraft can give help to soldiers on the ground. Naval aviation involves flying against targets at sea or on land.

Some machines even carry soldiers through the air using parachutes. Other aircraft act as tankers to provide fuel during long flights. Transport planes move important cargo and people to different places.

There are many ways to use the sky in combat. One way is called aerial reconnaissance. This means using aircraft to watch an enemy and collect information. Pilots might use cameras or radar to see what is happening. Another way is called air combat manoeuvring, or dogfighting. This is a tactical art where pilots move and turn their planes. They try to get a good position to attack another aircraft.

Soldiers can also be part of airborne forces. These units are dropped into battle by parachute to land behind enemy lines.

This type of warfare has a very long history. It began in ancient times with man-carrying kites in China. By the third century, people used balloons for warfare. In the early 20th century, large airships like zeppelins were used. Heavier-than-air airplanes first went to war in 1911 during the Italo-Turkish War. At first, they were only used for reconnaissance. Later, they were used to shoot down other planes. During World War I from 1914 to 1918, strategic bombing also began to appear.

Technology changed quickly during the middle of the 1900s. During World War II from 1939 to 1945, strategic bombing increased. This era also saw the introduction of missiles and early precision-guided munitions. Aircraft carriers became very important for moving air power across oceans. During the Cold War, ballistic missiles became a major part of warfare. The United States and the Soviet Union even stockpiled nuclear warheads to deter each other. These missiles were designed to be propelled by chemical reactions in engines.

Today, aerial warfare looks very different than it did in the past. Modern warfare includes unmanned aerial vehicles, which are often called drones. Drones can fly without a person inside the aircraft. They have changed from just watching areas to playing active combat roles. This has even led to drones fighting against manned fighter jets.

People on the ground also use anti-aircraft warfare to protect themselves. This includes using sensors and weapons to stop hostile aircraft. These tools help defend homes, naval ships, and ground forces from the sky.
