Land warfare is fighting that happens on the ground. It takes place on the land surface of our planet. This kind of combat can happen in many different places. Soldiers may work in the cold Arctic or hot deserts. They might fight in thick jungles or high mountains. Sometimes, the fighting happens in busy urban areas or cities.

Many different tools and people make up a land force. These forces include personnel and many different weapons. They also use vehicles and support elements to finish tasks. One main group is the infantry. These are soldiers who fight mostly on foot. They use small arms to defend themselves. They can travel to the fight by ships or planes.

Other groups use large combat vehicles to move heavy firepower. These vehicles can drive across very rugged terrain. Most have thick armor to protect the people inside. Main battle tanks are a common example of these. Infantry fighting vehicles are also used in these missions. Some vehicles are self-propelled artillery units. These machines help the army move and fight effectively.

Artillery is another very important part of land warfare. The word comes from the French word "artillerie." It also comes from the Old French word "attilier." That word means "to equip." Artillery uses engines to shoot projectiles at a distance. Some artillery stays on the coast to stop ships. Other types shoot at planes in the sky. This changed after powered flight began in the 20th century.

In the past, many untrained people fought in large groups. They often used simple weapons and frontal assaults. Today, highly trained troops use a method called combined arms. This means different groups work together to help each other. They might use tanks, infantry, and aircraft all at once. This helps them achieve better results in different environments. It is a very organized way to use many systems.
