Military tactics are the ways leaders organize and use fighting forces. These plans happen on or near a battlefield. Tactics help answer how to best use soldiers and their tools. They are different from the big plans called strategy. Tactics are the lowest level of warfighting. There are four main parts to any tactical plan. These parts are firepower, mobility, protection, and shock action.

Firepower is the strength of weapons used in a fight. Long ago, people used clubs and spears for this. Later, they used bows and javelins. The Romans introduced artillery to give more firepower. By the mid-19th century, muskets became more common. The rifled musket helped soldiers hit targets from further away. In the 20th century, machine guns added even more power. Today, armies use tanks and aircraft for firepower.

Mobility is how fast a force can move. For most of history, soldiers moved at the speed of walking. Some used animals like horses to move faster. Most armies could not travel much more than 15 miles a day. This changed during World War I with the invention of the tank. World War II brought even more mobility with motorized groups. However, many armies still used horse-drawn transport back then.

Protection and security keep soldiers and tools safe. People have worn personal armor since the classical period. Armor can be heavy and hard to move in. Soldiers also use fortifications to stay safe. These are things like walls, trenches, or barbed wire. Military engineers often build these obstacles. In World War I, soldiers began wearing helmets again. After that war, body armor became common for infantry.

Shock action uses surprise to win a fight. It can be a physical move or a mental one. Charging infantry or cavalry can provide this shock. Even war elephants were used to create momentum. At the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, English longbowmen used arrows to shock French knights. Modern tanks and planes also provide shock action. When all these different parts work together, it is called combined arms tactics. This helps every part of the team succeed.
