Military exercises are special ways for armed forces to train. These drills help soldiers practice for real operations without actual combat. They allow leaders to test new tactics and strategies in a safe way. Exercises also make sure that troops are ready to leave their home bases. Some drills focus on the readiness of staff members in command posts. These are called Command Post Exercises, or CPX. They often use simulated events to help leaders practice making decisions.

There is a difference between a military exercise and a war game. A military exercise uses real forces and full-scale operations. It tries to reproduce the difficult conditions of wartime. War games are usually much smaller and do not use real equipment. Instead, they use artificial players to act out a model of a real scenario. Sometimes, people use mathematical modeling to help find results in a war game. These games help leaders look at many different possible outcomes. They also help people understand how one choice might cause a specific effect.

History shows that training has changed a lot over time. Long ago, tabletop games like chess were used for non-tactical training. In the early 1800s, Prussian officers created modern tactical wargames. They invented a game called Kriegsspiel around the year 1811. These early games used dice to represent unexpected things like bad weather. This helped officers learn to handle the "friction" of real war. Later, the Prussian army used these games to help win the Franco-Prussian War in 1870.

Training can involve different groups of people and many nations. If forces from one nation train together, it is a joint exercise. If two nations work together, it is called a bilateral exercise. When many nations join in, it is a multilateral exercise. These large drills can show strength and help countries cooperate. In the 1950s, technology began to change how this training worked. In 1958, the Naval War College installed a computer system for war games. This system was called the Navy Electronic Warfare System. It cost more than $10 million to install.

Modern training also helps soldiers practice making hard ethical choices. During drills, they may face situations where the right choice is not clear. They must follow rules even when harm might happen. Some exercises use very high technology to simulate a battlefield. For example, DARPA has developed a serious game called DARWARS since 2003. Other soldiers use 360-degree technology to help them train. These tools help everyone learn how to act in complex and difficult environments.
