Different cultures have special names for their traditions. In Japan, martial arts are often called "budo." The suffix "-do" means "way" or "path." This means the art is a way to find a fulfilling life. Korean styles like Taekwondo focus on finding inner peace.

In Iran, there is a heroic sport called varzesh-e pahlavani. This was originally used to train warriors during the Safavid era. These names show how much pride people take in their skills.

Modern martial arts began to look like sports in the 1800s. In 1882, Kano Jigoro started the Kodokan School of judo.

This helped turn old fighting styles into a modern sport. In the 1960s and 1970s, movies made these arts very popular. Bruce Lee was a famous martial artist during this time. Today, martial arts connect people to history and to each other. They can be a way to stay fit or find calm.
