A kick is a powerful strike made using the leg.

People can hit a target using many different parts of their lower body. This includes the foot, the heel, the shin, or even the knee. Because human legs are longer and stronger than arms, kicks are very useful. They help a person keep an opponent at a distance. Kicks also allow a person to reach further and strike with great force.

There are many ways to perform a kick. A roundhouse kick swings the leg in a circular motion. This is a very common move in kickboxing because it is powerful. A front kick involves raising the knee and extending the leg straight forward.

Some people use the ball of the foot for a forward strike. A side kick moves sideways from the body. In Korean, this is called yeop chagi.

Practitioners often use their heel to hit hard targets like the ribs or chest.

Kicking has a long and interesting history. The English word for kick appeared in the late 14th century. It might come from an Old Norse word meaning to bend at the knees. Kicking has likely been part of human history since prehistory.

High kicks, which aim above the waist, are often linked to East Asian martial arts. Some believe these developed in Northern Chinese martial arts. Others think they came from an ancient Korean art called Taekkyon. The high kicks in Taekwondo today look very much like Taekkyon moves.

Many different cultures have their own special kicking traditions. In Thailand, Muay Boran was developed under the ruler Rama V between 1868 and 1910. The Indian epic called the Mahabharata mentions violent kicks in a battle.

Stone carvings in the Khmer Empire temples in Cambodia also show kicks. Some very old art, like 17th-century frescoes in the Shaolin temple, shows low kicks. Today, many people use kicks in sports like association football, which many call soccer.

Kicking is also a major part of mixed martial arts.

Learning to kick requires a lot of balance and skill. When you kick, you might lose some stability. This is a trade-off between having more power and staying balanced.

Some advanced moves are very complex. An axe kick uses the heel to strike downward like a tool. A butterfly kick uses a circular motion to make the person fly through the air.
