This use of the head is very rare in other sports. Because of these rules, Lethwei has a reputation for being very intense. It is a sport that carries great pride for the people of Myanmar.

Fighters follow specific rules during a match. They do not wear heavy boxing gloves. Instead, they wrap their hands in only tape and gauze.

They wear shorts but no shirts or shoes. Fighters must also wear a groin protector and a gum shield. In traditional matches, a fighter can only win by a knockout. If no one is knocked out, the fight is called a tie. Some rules even allow a two-minute timeout to help a fighter recover.

This sport has a very long history in Myanmar. Researchers believe its earliest form, called thaing, goes back to the 12th century.

You can even see carvings of combat on old temples in the Bagan region. In ancient times, matches were held in sand pits for entertainment. These matches were open to all men, from nobles to commoners. The sport faced hard times during British colonial rule. Later, it was revived under the government of General Ne Win.

Modern Lethwei has many important names and places. Kyar Ba Nyein helped create modern rules and regulations.

Lethwei is connected to many parts of Myanmar's culture. Fighters perform a special gesture called the lekkha moun to show respect.
