Unlike some other styles, you only use your feet to kick. You cannot use your knees or shins to strike. However, you can still target almost any part of the body. A man who practices this is called a tireur. A woman who practices it is called a tireuse.

There are different ways to practice these moves. In modern sport, there are three main levels of competition. The first is called Assaut. In Assaut, fighters focus on their skill and technique. They must not use too much force. The next level is Pre-combat. This level allows for full-strength fighting if you wear protective gear. This gear includes helmets and shinguards. The third level is Combat. This is the most intense way to fight. Fighters only wear mouthguards and groin protection.

Savate has a very long and interesting history. It began in the 17th century in the port of Marseille. Sailors used these moves while traveling on ships. They called their style chausson, which means slipper.

They used high kicks to stay balanced on rocking decks. Some people think they used open-handed slaps to avoid legal trouble. In Paris, street fighters used a different style. They wore heavy boots and kept their kicks much lower. This northern style was meant for tough street fighting.

Two men helped turn these street moves into a formal sport. Michel Casseux opened a school in 1825 to teach regulated moves. Later, Charles Lecour changed the art around 1830. He watched an English boxing match in France in 1838.

He realized he could combine boxing punches with kicking moves. This created the modern sport we see today. His student, Joseph Charlemont, helped develop it further. Later, his son Charles Charlemont also became a professional developer of the sport.

Today, people practice savate all over the world. You can find it in places like the US and Australia.

It even appeared as a demonstration sport at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. Instead of colored belts, fighters use glove colors to show their rank. A technical fighter might use a blue, green, or red glove. Teaching ranks are also important in the sport. These include levels like moniteur and professeur. It takes many years of hard work to reach the highest levels.
