"text": "Sabotage is a deliberate action meant to weaken a group or a government. A person who does this is called a saboteur. They often try to hide who they are to avoid trouble. Saboteurs use many ways to cause disruption or destruction. They might use subversion to undermine an organization from within. They may also use division to make a group struggle. This can happen in politics, work, or during a war.

\n\nThere are two main ways people carry out sabotage. The first way is through physical destruction of things. This includes damaging machines, fuel tanks, or buildings. The second way is through the \"human element.\" This means using people to make things harder. For example, workers might work much slower than usual. This is often called a slowdown. They might also act in ways that create confusion. They could make bad decisions on purpose to waste time.

\n\nThe word has a very interesting history. It comes from the French word \"sabot.\" A sabot was a type of wooden shoe. Some people believe workers threw these shoes into machines to stop them. One famous story involves workers in the city of Liège. However, many historians say that story is not actually true. In the 1800s, the word meant to bungle or wreck something. By the end of the 19th century, it meant destroying property.

\n\nMany different groups have used sabotage for different reasons. Labor unions like the IWW have used it for self-defense. In 1910, Big Bill Haywood saw railroad workers in France use it. They misdirected freight to win their demands. In 1974, workers in Québec damaged a large power station. This caused two million dollars in damage. Some groups also use it to protect the environment. The Earth Liberation Front worked to delay construction near wildlands.

\n\nSabotage is also a common tool used during wars.
