The word comes from the French word for wooden shoes. These shoes were called sabots. Some stories say workers threw them into machines. This would stop the machines from working.

Workers often use sabotage to ask for fairness. They might work very slowly to show they are unhappy. This is called a slowdown. In 1910, a man named Bill Haywood saw this in France. Railroad workers there made mistakes to win their demands.

In wars, sabotage is used to hurt the enemy. People might damage fuel tanks or train tracks. They might even use computer code to break machines.

Some people use sabotage to protect nature. They may damage machines that hurt the earth. This is often called eco-sabotage. Saboteurs try to stay hidden. They do not want to get caught.
