Anomie

society Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Anomie is a special word used in sociology. Sociology is the study of how people live in groups. Anomie describes a time when social rules or values break down. This can happen when a community loses its shared guidance. People might feel lost or disconnected from those around them. It often feels like the old ways of living no longer work. This state can cause a sense of purposelessness in many individuals.

This condition often starts when a society changes very quickly. For example, big changes in money or jobs can cause it. When these changes happen, old rules might not fit new lives. This creates a mismatch between what people want and what they can do. This gap is sometimes called a strain. When people cannot reach goals in fair ways, they might act differently. This behavior is known as deviance.

Many years ago, a thinker named Émile Durkheim studied this. He first wrote about the idea in his 1893 book. That book was called The Division of Labour in Society. Later, in 1897, he wrote another famous book called Suicide. Durkheim noticed that different religious groups had different social ties. He thought Catholic groups often had very strong bonds. He believed these ties helped people feel less alone.

Durkheim used interesting words to describe this feeling. He called it a "malady of the infinite." This means that wanting things without any limit can never be satisfied. He also used the word "derangement" to show how it feels. In 1938, another researcher named Robert K. Merton added to these ideas. He looked at how the gap between goals and means causes trouble. He even identified five different types of deviance in his work.

It is important to know that anomie is not anarchy. Anarchy is when there are no rulers or leaders at all. Anomie is more about a feeling of being lost within a system. Some people even use the word "synnomie" to mean the opposite. Synnomie is when rules and people fit together in harmony. This happens when families and communities provide strong support. It keeps the social fabric feeling whole and connected.
