Anomie

society Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Sometimes, the rules of a group change too fast. This can feel very strange. People might not know how to act. This feeling is called anomie.

One thinker named Émile Durkheim studied this. He saw that people need rules to feel safe. Without them, people can feel alone.

He thought that strong groups help people. For example, some groups stay close and help each other. This makes people feel like they belong.

When rules are gone, people may feel lost. They might not know what is right or wrong. This can happen when a way of life changes.

It is good to have ways to help us. Rules help us live well together.
