He is known as a main architect of modern social science. This means he helped build the way we study people today. He worked alongside other famous thinkers like Karl Marx and Max Weber. Durkheim wanted to understand how societies stay together. He was interested in how groups keep their strength. He looked at how new rules and institutions form in modern times.

Durkheim believed that studying society should be a real science. He did not want to just guess about how people act. Instead, he used tools like statistics and surveys. He also used historical observation to find real facts. He studied how different groups, like Roman Catholics and Protestants, behaved. He looked for patterns in these groups to understand social facts. To him, a social fact was something that belongs to the whole group. He believed sociology should look at the whole picture of society.

His journey as a thinker began with his family history. Durkheim was born on April 15, 1858, in Épinal, France. His family had a long line of rabbis going back eight generations. He even started his education in a rabbinical school. However, he decided to take a different path in life. He moved away from religious studies to focus on secular ideas. He eventually studied at the École normale supérieure in 1879. This was a very famous school for brilliant students.

Durkheim published many important books during his career. In 1893, he wrote The Division of Labour in Society. In 1895, he wrote The Rules of Sociological Method. He also wrote a famous study called Le Suicide in 1897. This book helped show how social science is different from psychology. In 1898, he started a journal called L'Année sociologique. By 1912, he published his last major work on religion. He also held important teaching jobs in Bordeaux and Paris.

Durkheim's ideas still help us understand our world today. He helped create the first sociology department in Europe in 1895. He also influenced how teachers are trained in France. Even today, people use terms he created, like "collective consciousness." These ideas help us think about how we all belong to a group. His life ended during a very sad time in history. His son died during World War I, and Durkheim died in 1917. He is buried in the Montparnasse Cemetery in Paris.
