General strike

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A general strike is a very large type of strike. It happens when a huge number of workers stop working at the same time. These workers do not just come from one shop or one factory. Instead, they come from many different jobs across a city, a region, or even a whole country.

People use these strikes to make their voices heard. They might want to help a trade union gain more power. They may also want to reach a big social or political goal. This kind of action can involve entire communities working together.

Groups use these strikes to reach specific goals through teamwork. For example, workers might want higher pay or better working conditions. In 1835, workers in Philadelphia, USA, held a strike for three weeks. Because they stood together, they won a ten-hour workday and more money.

In other places, strikes were used to change how a country is run. Some people even thought strikes could stop wars from happening. These ideas often grew from people wanting to make society fairer for everyone.

Long ago, people had early ideas about working together. Some look back to ancient times, like the Roman Republic. Others look to Jewish traditions involving debt relief and land changes. During the Age of Enlightenment, thinkers like Jean Meslier wrote about these ideas. In the 19th century, Constantin François de Chassebœuf proposed a strike for every useful profession.

He believed the people should stand together against those who do nothing. His ideas helped shape how people thought about strikes in Great Britain.

One important person was William Benbow, a shoemaker from Britain. In January 1832, he wrote a pamphlet called "Grand National Holiday." He suggested workers take a month-long holiday to demand change.

He wanted workers to use their savings to support each other. In April 1842, a major strike happened in Britain after Parliament rejected a petition. It started in coal mines in Staffordshire and spread to factories and mills. This was the first general strike in a capitalist country. It moved from asking for better pay to wanting big political changes.

These strikes helped create many important modern traditions. In 1886, a huge strike happened in the United States for an eight-hour workday. This strike was centered in Chicago and involved hundreds of thousands of workers.

Sadly, some leaders were executed after a riot occurred during the protests. Because of this event, May 1 became known as International Workers' Day. Today, people still use strikes to talk about fairness in the world. They remain a way for many people to act as one.
