It uses industrial unionism to bring people together. This means workers join groups based on their specific jobs. These unions use direct action to reach their goals. One common way is through a strike. A strike is when workers stop working to ask for changes. The big goal is social ownership. This means workers would eventually control the economy and the tools used to make things.

This movement has deep roots in history. Some ideas came from Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. He was a thinker who wanted people to cooperate. He believed workers should oppose state control. Later, Mikhail Bakunin became a famous leader. He thought worker groups could use force to help their cause. He also believed in the general strike. These ideas helped shape how syndicalists think today.

Many important events helped the movement grow. In 1886, a big struggle happened in Chicago. It was part of a fight for an eight-hour workday. This event was known as the Haymarket Affair. It was a very sad time for labor organizers. After this, many people in France turned toward the labor movement. In 1895, the CGT was formed in France.

Syndicalism spread to many different countries.

In the United States, the IWW was a major group. Many people called them the "Wobblies." In Spain, the CNT was a very large organization. Other groups included the USI in Italy and the FORA in Argentina.

In 1922, the IWA was formed as an international group. It brought together many different unions from around the world. This helped millions of workers connect with each other.

Ideas traveled across the world in many ways. Some people moved to new countries and brought their beliefs. For example, immigrants helped start the FORA in Argentina.

Other people shared ideas through newspapers and books. French leaders like Émile Pouget wrote many pamphlets. These were translated into many languages like English and German. Even sailors helped spread these ideas in port cities. This made syndicalism a truly global movement for workers.
