Filmmakers in France have always worked to create something special. Their work has helped shape how movies are made everywhere.

Many people around the globe love and appreciate French films.

The history of film began with the Lumière brothers in 1895.

They used a machine called the cinématographe to show moving pictures. One of their famous early films was about a train arriving at a station. Later, Georges Méliès used new techniques to make the first science fiction film. It was called A Trip to the Moon and came out in 1902. Another pioneer, Alice Guy-Blaché, directed about 400 films early on. She was a very important leader at the Gaumont studio.

As time passed, the film industry faced many changes and hard jobs. After World War I, French films struggled because they lacked money. Many American films began to enter the European market instead. To help, France set a rule called an import quota. This meant for every seven foreign films shown, one French film had to be made. Between the two World Wars, directors created a style called Poetic Realism. Jean Renoir made the famous film La Règle du Jeu in 1939.

In the late 1950s, a new movement called the New Wave began.

This movement was led by critics who became famous directors. Jean-Luc Godard made the film Breathless in 1960. François Truffaut made The 400 Blows in 1959. These filmmakers used new styles that inspired people all over the world. During this time, many actors became international stars.

Large groups like Pathé and StudioCanal are very important in Europe. In 2013, France was the second largest exporter of films. This means they sold more films to other countries than almost anyone else. Although their market share has changed since then, they are still very successful. In fact, France ranks fourth on the all-time box office chart. They continue to make movies that people everywhere enjoy watching.
