For many centuries, Paris has been a famous center for high art. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, people saw it as the capital of Western culture. Today, France is well known for many things like fashion, cinema, and delicious food.

A 2014 poll by the BBC even ranked France fourth for having a positive influence on the world. This influence comes from its many different groups and historical events.

Language is a big part of how French people live and share ideas. While many speak French, there are also many regional languages. Some are Celtic, like Breton, which is close to Welsh.

Others are like German, such as the Alsatian dialect. The Basque language is very special because it is not related to any other language. In 2008, the French Parliament officially recognized these regional languages as part of the country's heritage. This was a big change after years of the government trying to limit them.

Religion in France is managed through a rule called laïcité.

This means there is a clear line between private life and public life. The government stays secular, which means it is separate from religious groups. This rule comes from the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. It protects the freedom to believe in a religion or not to believe at all. This includes the freedom to be an atheist or an agnostic. People are treated as equal citizens in public, no matter what they believe.

Catholicism has a very long history in France.

In the past, the Catholic Church was the official state religion. This led to many years of conflict, including the French Wars of Religion. During the 16th century, many people became Protestants, known as Huguenots. This caused much struggle and even led many people to leave France for safety. Today, many people are still Catholic, but the country has become much more secular over time. Most people now live in cities, which has changed how they practice their faith.

Other faiths also make up the beautiful mix of French life.

There is a large Jewish community with roots going back over 2,000 years. Many famous Jewish artists were part of the School of Paris. Islam is the third-largest faith in the country today. Many Muslim families came from North African countries like Algeria and Morocco. The Grand Mosque in Paris was built in 1929 to honor soldiers from North Africa. All these different groups help shape the modern face of France.
