The French New Wave was a famous movement in art films. It began in France during the late 1950s. These filmmakers wanted to change how movies were made. They did not like the old way of making films. Many people called that old style the "Tradition of Quality." That style focused more on craft than on new ideas.

New Wave directors wanted to experiment instead. They wanted to show the world in a fresh way. This movement is still very important in film history today.

Making these films required new and clever ways of working. Directors often used small, portable cameras to move around easily. They did not need a lot of setup time for their shots. Many films used a documentary style to look more real.

They used techniques like long takes and fragmented editing. One famous trick is the jump cut. This is a sudden, quick change in the film. Jean-Luc Godard used these in his film *Breathless*. This helped him make the movie shorter and more exciting.

Most of these filmmakers started as writers and critics. They wrote for a magazine called *Cahiers du Cinéma*.

They believed in the "auteur theory." This theory says the director is the true author. A director should leave their own personal mark on every movie. They admired great directors like Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles. These critics eventually decided to direct their own movies.

Many key people helped the movement grow. François Truffaut was a very important leader. He made the famous film *The 400 Blows* in 1959. Jean-Luc Godard was another major figure. Agnès Varda also made important films like *La Pointe Courte*.

The movement was very popular between 1958 and 1962. Many directors were born in the 1930s. They grew up in Paris and understood young people. Their films showed city life, fashion, and all-night parties.

The New Wave changed how people think about stories. Instead of perfect plots, they showed life as it is. Sometimes characters would even talk directly to the audience. This reminded viewers that they were watching a movie. The movement also influenced other places like the United Kingdom. In the U.K., people used "kitchen sink realism" to challenge traditions. Even in the United States, new styles emerged from these ideas. The spirit of the New Wave lives on in modern films.
