People call this the French New Wave. Before this, many French films were very formal. They often felt like old books turned into movies. New filmmakers wanted to break these old rules. They wanted to make films that felt fresh and real.

These directors often started as film critics. They wrote for a magazine called Cahiers du Cinéma. Some famous names include François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard.

They believed in the auteur theory. This is the idea that a director is the true author of a film. The movie should show the director's own personal vision.

Making these films was often a way to save money. They used small, portable cameras. They shot on real streets or in friends' homes.

They used new tricks like jump cuts. A jump cut is a quick, sudden change in the film. These movies showed the lives of young people in France. They captured fashion, parties, and city life. This new style changed how movies are made today.
