He loved to study how movies work. In 1951, he helped start a magazine called Cahiers du cinéma.

André had big ideas about what movies should do. He believed movies should show real life. He liked a style called deep focus. This is when the camera keeps things in the front and back clear at once.

This lets the viewer decide what to look at. He did not like it when editing changed reality. He thought movies should show a director's own vision. This idea helped start the auteur theory. This theory says a director is like an artist.

Many filmmakers learned from his work. A director named François Truffaut made a movie to honor him. It was called The 400 Blows. André was born in Angers, France.
