He spent his life studying how movies work and what they mean. Bazin believed that the most important job of a movie is to show real life. He wanted films to show an objective reality. This means the movie should feel like a real window into the world. He thought movies should be a way for a director to share a personal vision. This idea helped create the auteur theory, which views directors as true artists.

To show this reality, Bazin had specific ideas about how to use a camera. He liked a technique called deep focus. This is when the camera keeps things in the front and the back of a scene clear at the same time.

He also liked wide shots and what he called the "shot-in-depth." Bazin preferred these methods over heavy editing or special visual effects. He believed that using long takes allowed the viewer to choose what to look at. This gave the person watching the movie more freedom to interpret the scene. He did not want editing to manipulate how people saw reality.

Bazin's journey into film began during a very difficult time in history. He was born in Angers, France, on April 18, 1918. He studied at the École normale supérieure in Saint-Cloud and graduated in 1941. He wanted to be a teacher, but he could not get a job because of a stammer. Instead, he joined a group called Maison des Lettres in Paris. During the German occupation of Paris, he even started a film club. In 1951, he helped start the famous magazine Cahiers du cinéma. He worked there with Jacques Doniol-Valcroze and Joseph-Marie Lo Duca.

Bazin's life and work left a huge mark on the world of art. He married Janine Kirsch in 1949, and they had a son named Florent. Sadly, Bazin was diagnosed with leukemia in 1954. He passed away in Nogent-sur-Marne on November 11, 1958, when he was only 40 years old. Even though he died young, his ideas lived on through the French New Wave filmmakers. The director François Truffaut even dedicated his great film, The 400 Blows, to Bazin. This movie was released in May 1959 and is considered a masterpiece.

In 2018, a large collection called André Bazin: Selected Writings 1943–1958 was released. Even in modern movies, you can see his influence. His belief that every shot is a way to see the world remains a powerful idea for anyone who loves movies.
