Clair became a leader in the world of movies. He was known as an auteur. This means he had full control over his films. He wrote the scripts and helped with the editing. He even watched over every part of the making process. In 1960, he was elected to the Académie Française. This is a very special group in France.

Clair started his career in many different ways. He was a journalist for a newspaper called L'Intransigeant. He also wrote songs for a singer named Damia. In 1920, he acted in a film called Le Lys de la vie. He chose the stage-name René Clair for his work. Later, he became an assistant to director Jacques de Baroncelli. By 1924, he directed his first short film. It was a comic fantasy called Paris qui dort.

He also made a short film called Entr'acte in 1924. This film made him a member of the Parisian avant-garde. This was a group of artists who tried new things.

He was very famous for his silent films. These movies had no spoken words. He often made stories about fantasy and dreams. One of his well-known silent films was Un chapeau de paille d'Italie in 1928. He also worked with the Films Albatros company. There, he met important partners like designer Lazare Meerson. Clair was considered a great name in cinema. He stood alongside other legends like Charlie Chaplin. His work helped create a romantic image of Paris for the whole world.

When sound was added to movies, Clair found new ways to use it. He did not want sound to just copy the pictures. He made films like Sous les toits de Paris in 1930. He also made Le Million and À nous la liberté in 1931. During World War II, he had to leave France. He moved to the United Kingdom and then to the United States. He worked in Hollywood for several years. He made the film I Married a Witch in 1942.

He made a film called Le silence est d'or in 1947. This movie looked back at the early days of French film. His career spanned many decades and many different countries. He showed that a filmmaker could take responsibility for their art. Even in the big American studio system, he did what he wanted.
