Marcel Carné was a famous French film director. He was born in Paris on August 18, 1906. People remember him for a style called poetic realism. This style often tells sad or tragic stories. He worked with a poet named Jacques Prévert for many years. Together, they made some of the most important films in France. One of their greatest works was Children of Paradise. This film was released in 1945. In 1992, many French experts voted it the best French film of the century.

Carné did not start as a director. He first worked as a film critic. He helped edit a weekly magazine called Hebdo-Films. He also worked for magazines called Cinémagazine and Cinémonde. Between 1929 and 1933, he learned about movies by writing about them. He also worked as a camera assistant for a director named Jacques Feyder. By the age of 25, he directed his first short film. It was called Nogent, Eldorado du dimanche.

His career changed when he began working with Jacques Prévert. Prévert was a poet and a screenwriter. They worked together for more than twelve years. They made films like Port of Shadows in 1938. They also made Le Jour Se Lève in 1939. These films are part of the poetic realism movement. This movement is known for its fatalistic stories. Carné also took over a project called Jenny in 1936. This was a big step for his career.

Carné made movies during a very hard time in history. During World War II, Germany occupied France. Carné worked in the Vichy zone. He worked to protect art from the new rules. His film crew included Jewish people like Alexandre Trauner. Trauner was a set designer. Joseph Kosma was also part of his team. They worked under difficult conditions to finish Children of Paradise. This film came out after the Liberation of France.

Later in his life, Carné had mixed success. He made a film called Les Portes de la nuit in 1946. It was a very expensive movie for French film history. However, critics did not like it very much. In 1958, he had a big hit called Young Sinners. He also led a jury at the 6th Berlin International Film Festival. His last film was made in 1976. Carné died in Clamart in 1996. He was buried in the Cimetière Saint-Vincent in Montmartre.
