Jean Vigo was a famous French film director. He helped create a style called poetic realism in the 1930s. This style mixed real life with dream-like scenes. His work changed how people made movies later on. It influenced the French New Wave in the late 1950s. Many people think his art is very special.

His movies often felt very unique. One film was a silent movie called À propos de Nice. It looked at life in the resort town of Nice. Another film was a short documentary about a swimmer named Jean Taris. His most famous film was L'Atalante. This was his only full-length feature film. It tells a story about a newly married couple. The movie moves between real life and shimmering, dream-like parts.

Jean Vigo had a very difficult early life. He was born to Emily Cléro and Miguel Almereyda. His father was a political activist. Because of his father, Jean spent much of his youth on the run. He even went to school under a different name. This was to hide his true identity. He married Elisabeth Lozinska in 1929. They had a daughter named Luce Vigo in 1931.

Jean Vigo only made four films in his career. One was Zero for Conduct, made in 1933. The French government banned this film until after the war. His last film, L'Atalante, was released in 1934. It was not a big financial success at first. He even had to sell his camera because of money problems. Jean died in 1934 from tuberculosis. He was only 29 years old.

Today, people still celebrate his amazing work. L'Atalante was named one of the best films ever. In 1992, a poll put it at number six. A 1934 copy of the film was found in a British archive. This helped people fix the film to its original version. There are even awards named after him. The Prix Jean Vigo is given to French directors. His daughter Luce also became a famous film critic.
