Many critics call it one of the greatest movies ever made. It tells a moving story about life on the water. The plot follows Jean, a barge captain, and his new wife, Juliette. They live on a large boat called a barge. The crew includes a cabin boy and an eccentric man named Père Jules. The story shows how the couple faces joy and deep sadness.

It captures the feeling of being lost and then finding your way home.

Making the film was a very big job for the crew. The director, Jean Vigo, wanted every scene to be perfect. He would often act out the parts for his actors to follow. To make the boat feel real, they used a real barge named Louise XVI. They also built a replica of the boat in a studio. For the character Père Jules, Vigo used over ten real cats. These cats were provided by the SPCA. The cats even acted by huddling around a music player during scenes.

Jean Vigo began working on this project after a difficult time. His previous short film, Zero for Conduct, had been banned in France. At first, he wanted to make a movie about a man named Eugène Dieudonné. Later, he and his producer, Jacques-Louis Nounez, looked for new ideas. In July 1933, Nounez gave Vigo a story about people living on barges. This was a popular topic in France at that time. Vigo and Albert Riéra then rewrote the story to create the film we know today.

Production started in mid-November 1933 and lasted for four months. The budget for the film was 1 million French francs.

The cast included famous actors like Michel Simon and Dita Parlo. Jean Dasté played the lead role of Jean. Filming was very hard because the winter weather was freezing and wet. Sometimes there was even floating ice in the canals. Because of the snow, Vigo had to use special camera angles. He shot many views from low down to show only the sky. This helped hide the white ground in the background.

This movie connects to the real world in many ways. The film uses real locations like the Oise and the canals near Paris. It even uses real people as extras in some scenes. For example, a scene shows real unemployed workers walking by. The music in the film also has a special history. The crew wrote a folk song called "The Pedlar's Complaint" for the movie. Even though the filming was hard on Vigo's health, he finished most of it. His dedication helped create a masterpiece that people still love today.
