Breathless is a famous French crime drama film from 1960. It is a major part of the French New Wave, or nouvelle vague. This movement changed how movies were made around the world. The film follows a young criminal named Michel Poiccard. He is a wild man who loves American gangster movies. Michel meets an American student named Patricia Franchini in Paris.

Their relationship is full of energy and tension. Michel is reckless and talks a lot. Patricia is more quiet and tries to understand her own life. They are the heart of this bold story.

Making the film was a very unique way of working. Director Jean-Luc Godard wanted a natural and documentary feel. He did not use big movie sets. Instead, the crew filmed in real streets and hotels. The cinematographer, Raoul Coutard, used a hand-held camera to move around. Sometimes, they even used a wheelchair to push the camera. This helped the film feel fast and alive.

They often worked with very little light. This made the images look very real and raw.

Godard wrote the script while he was making the movie. He often gave lines to the actors with very little practice. This helped the actors act in a spontaneous way. The film is famous for using jump cuts. A jump cut is a quick break in a scene. It makes the film feel like it is jumping forward in time.

This was a very new idea at the time. It gave the movie a special and different tone. Many people had never seen movies edited this way before.

History shows that this film was a huge success. When it first came out in France, over two million people saw it. It helped make the actor Jean-Paul Belmondo a star. The film was based on a real news story from 1952. That story was about a man named Michel Portail. He stole a car and killed a policeman in France.

Godard took that real event and turned it into art. He even used the visit of President Eisenhower as a background.

Today, people still talk about Breathless as a masterpiece. It has appeared many times in famous film polls. Critics have called it one of the best films ever made. In 2010, a restored version was released in the United States. This was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the film.
