Film noir is a special kind of crime drama from Hollywood.

The name comes from French words meaning "black film" or "dark film." These movies often focus on characters with cynical attitudes. A cynical person might not trust others easily. Many stories follow a private investigator or a police officer. You might also meet a "femme fatale," which is a woman who leads a hero into trouble.

Some plots follow a boxer or even a simple citizen caught in a crime. People love these stories because they feel intense and serious.

Visual style is a huge part of how these films work. Most classic noir movies use black-and-white film. They use a technique called "low-key lighting" to create deep shadows. This makes the scenes look dark and moody. The pictures often look unbalanced to make the viewer feel uneasy.

These visual choices help tell the story without using many words. Directors use shadows to hide things or show secrets. This way of filming makes the world of the movie feel heavy. It turns a simple street into a place of mystery.

This style has a very interesting history. It grew from an art movement in Germany called German Expressionism. This movement used theater, painting, and music to show deep feelings. During the 1930s, many artists moved from Germany to Hollywood. They brought these dark and expressive styles with them.

Some early films like "M" from 1931 showed these ideas early on. Other experts say the style also came from French "poetic realism." This was a way of telling stories about doomed heroes. These different paths all met in the American film industry.

The "classic period" for film noir was the 1940s and 1950s.

A French critic named Nino Frank first used the term in 1946. He was likely inspired by a French book series called "Série noire." For a long time, many people in America did not use this name. They often just called these movies "melodramas." Some famous movies from this time include "The Maltese Falcon" from 1941.

Another important film was "Citizen Kane," which was released in 1941. These films helped set the rules for what noir should look like.

Today, people still talk about what makes a film "noir." Experts argue if it is a genre or just a style. A genre is a specific category of story with set rules. Some think it is just a mood or a filmmaking style.

Even if they disagree, the influence is still everywhere. New movies made after the 1960s that use these ideas are called "neo-noir." You can see these patterns in many modern stories. The dark shadows and tough characters still capture our imagination. They remind us of the classic films from long ago.
