Hammett used his own life to help him write. Before he was a writer, he worked as a detective. He worked for the Pinkerton National Detective Agency from 1915 to 1922. He learned the trade while working in Baltimore. He even traveled to Butte, Montana, during miners' strikes. These real experiences helped him write stories that felt true. He often said he took his characters from real life. This made his dialogue sound very natural for that time.

His life began on a farm in Maryland in 1894.
