He specialized in hard-boiled detective fiction and short stories. This style is known for its realism and gritty tone. Hammett is widely considered one of the greatest mystery writers in history. His 1929 novel, Red Harvest, was named one of the 100 best English-language novels published between 1923 and 2005.

His work also helped shape the film noir style in cinema. This cinematic style often uses dark themes and shadows to tell stories.

Hammett's writing process relied heavily on his personal history. He worked as an operative for the Pinkerton National Detective Agency from 1915 to 1922. During this time, he learned the actual mechanics of detective work. He worked in Baltimore and may have traveled to Butte, Montana, during miners' union strikes. These professional experiences provided the foundation for his authentic storytelling. He famously stated that he took most of his characters from real life. This approach allowed him to write dialogue that sounded natural for the era.

His literary career featured several distinct types of characters and formats. He wrote many stories for the pulp magazine Black Mask. These stories often featured a nameless private investigator known as The Continental Op. He also created iconic characters like Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon. Another famous creation was the duo Nick and Nora Charles from The Thin Man.

Beyond novels, he also worked as a screenwriter. His screenplay for Watch on the Rhine received an Academy Award nomination for Best Writing.

Hammett's early life was marked by significant responsibility and hardship. He was born in 1894 on a farm in Maryland. His family moved to Baltimore when he was four years old. At age thirteen, he dropped out of high school. He had to do this to earn money for his family due to his father's declining health. This early need to work led him through various jobs before his detective career. These early struggles shaped his perspective on the world.

His personal life was often complicated by health issues and family changes. While serving in the Army Ambulance Service during World War I, he contracted the Spanish flu and tuberculosis.

He married a nurse named Josephine Dolan in 1921. They had two daughters, Mary Jane and Josephine. Because of his tuberculosis, his wife and children lived in a separate home in San Francisco. Although their marriage eventually ended, Hammett continued to support them through his writing income. He later had a long, thirty-year relationship with the playwright Lillian Hellman.

Hammett was also a dedicated and active political figure. He was a staunch antifascist and joined the Communist Party in 1937. He served as the president of the League of American Writers in 1941. Some scholars view his novel Red Harvest as a Marxist critique of the social system. Others argue his work lacks the mass-action typical of political literature. He remained a committed activist even when his health declined. He was later elected president of the Civil Rights Congress.

During World War II, Hammett returned to military service at age 48.

His enlistment was difficult due to his age, his political affiliations, and his tuberculosis. He served in the Aleutian Islands near Alaska. There, he worked on cryptanalysis and edited an Army newspaper called The Adakian. During his service, he also co-authored a book titled The Battle of the Aleutians. Even while serving, he faced scrutiny from the House Committee on Military Affairs regarding his political beliefs. He eventually died in 1961, leaving behind a massive legacy in crime fiction.
