Philip Marlowe is a famous fictional character created by the author Raymond Chandler. He is a private investigator who represents the hardboiled crime fiction genre. This specific style of writing began to emerge in the 1920s. Many of these early stories were published in a magazine called Black Mask. Characters like Sam Spade and The Continental Op helped define this genre first. Marlowe became a central figure in this literary world. He is more than just a detective solving crimes. He is a complex man who is often contemplative and philosophical.

Marlowe’s personality is a mix of toughness and intellect. While he is a wisecracking and tough investigator, he also enjoys chess and poetry. He is a man of high moral standards. He does not use violence just to settle personal scores. He is also known for being difficult to fool. For example, he is not tricked by the "femmes fatales" often found in crime stories. One such character is Carmen Sternwood from the novel The Big Sleep. This depth of character helped Chandler develop the detective novel form.

Chandler used a unique method to build Marlowe’s long history. He often wrote short stories for pulp magazines like Dime Detective. He would later combine and expand these stories into full novels. Chandler called this process "cannibalizing," though it is often called a "fix-up" in publishing. His early characters had different names, such as Carmady or John Dalmas. The name Philip Marlowe first appeared in the 1939 novel The Big Sleep. Chandler was 51 years old when he published that first full-length book. He continued writing until he was 70 years old.

Marlowe’s life in Los Angeles is filled with specific, concrete details. His office is located in the Cahuenga Building on Hollywood Boulevard. This building was likely inspired by the Security Savings and Trust building. His office is modest and lacks a secretary. Marlowe has lived in several places, including the Bristol Hotel and a house on Yucca Avenue. He has a very specific way of making coffee using a vacuum coffee maker. He also has specific tastes in tobacco, such as Camel cigarettes.

There are many interesting inconsistencies in Marlowe’s biography. Chandler did not always agree on the character's age or height. In The Big Sleep, Marlowe is 33 years old. However, in The Long Goodbye, he is 42. In a 1951 letter, Chandler stated Marlowe was 38 and born in Santa Rosa, California. His height also changes between books. One book describes him as six feet, one half inch tall. Another book implies he is exactly six feet tall. These details show how a character can grow and change over time.

Marlowe’s habits also define his character in the stories. He frequently drinks whiskey, brandy, or Kentucky bourbon like Old Forester. He even uses liquor as a tool to make people talk. He is also known to drink coffee and various cocktails like Gimlets or a whiskey sour. He is typically portrayed as a bachelor. While he has romantic encounters, he often refuses sexual opportunities on moral grounds. In the novel Playback, he eventually marries a character named Linda Loring.

Philip Marlowe has left a massive impact on popular culture. Many films have brought his adventures to the screen. The 1946 film The Big Sleep stars Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Other writers have also been authorized to continue his story. Robert B. Parker completed the novel Poodle Springs after Chandler died. This book was based on unfinished chapters called "The Poodle Springs Story." Today, many different authors write new versions of Marlowe stories. He remains a vital symbol of the hardboiled detective tradition.
