Chandler had a very busy life before he became a novelist. He was born in Chicago in 1888. He lived in England for many years as a child. He even worked in the British civil service. Later, he moved to America and lived in San Francisco. He worked many different jobs like picking fruit and stringing tennis rackets. During World War I, he joined the Canadian military. He served in the trenches in France. He also studied to be a pilot for the Royal Air Force.

His writing became very successful in the 1930s and 1940s. His first big novel was The Big Sleep, published in 1939. Other famous books include Farewell, My Lovely and The Long Goodbye. Many of his stories were made into movies. He also worked as a screenwriter for Hollywood. He helped write the famous film Double Indemnity. He even worked on a movie with the director Alfred Hitchcock. His work was so good that it earned him several Academy Award nominations.

Today, people still study Chandler's work in schools. His books helped define the mystery genre. He believed a detective should be a "complete man." This means the hero should be both common and unusual. His character Philip Marlowe is often seen as the classic private eye. Even after Chandler died in 1959, other writers kept his stories alive. For example, Robert B. Parker finished an unfinished book by Chandler. Chandler's influence on American literature is still very large today.
