It is known as a "hardboiled" story, which means it has a tough and gritty feeling. The book follows a private investigator named Philip Marlowe. He lives and works in the city of Los Angeles. The title is a euphemism, which is a polite way to say something else. In this book, the title is a way to talk about death. People love this story because it is very complex. Characters often trick each other or hide deep secrets throughout the plot.

To create this big novel, Chandler used a special way of writing. He did not start from nothing. Instead, he used a method called "cannibalizing" his own short stories. He took stories he had already written for a magazine called Black Mask. Two of these stories were "Killer in the Rain" from 1935 and "The Curtain" from 1936. He merged the fathers and daughters from these stories into new characters. He also used parts from two other stories called "Finger Man" and "Mandarin's Jade." This helped him build a much larger and more detailed world.

Chandler cared about more than just the facts of the mystery. He believed that atmosphere and character were the most important parts. He wanted his characters to act in ways that felt believable. Sometimes, this meant the plot had a few loose ends. For example, the book does not explain who killed the chauffeur. When the director Howard Hawks asked about this, Chandler said he did not know. Chandler spent his time making the descriptions of people and places feel very real. He wanted the reader to feel the mood of the setting.

Many important groups have recognized this book over the years. In 1999, a newspaper called Le Monde voted it the 96th best book of the century. Later, in 2005, Time magazine included it on a list of the 100 best novels. The story has also been told on screen many times. A famous movie came out in 1946 starring the actor Humphrey Bogart. Another film version was made in 1978 starring Robert Mitchum. There were even radio plays on BBC Radio 4 in 1977 and 2011.

The story reflects the real world of the 1930s in America. During this time, many people faced hard jobs and money problems. This was the era of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. People were moving to big cities like Los Angeles to find work. Because of these changes, the old ways of life were shifting. Chandler's writing captured this sense of change and struggle. His main character, Marlowe, acts like a lone wolf trying to do right. This makes the book feel like a true piece of history.
