It is a classic example of a style called film noir. Many people call it one of the greatest films ever made. The story follows an insurance salesman named Walter Neff.

He meets a woman named Phyllis Dietrichson. Together, they plot a crime to get a large insurance payout. The title comes from a real insurance rule. This rule is a "double indemnity" clause. It means the company pays twice the money if a death happens in a very rare way.

The plot is a dark and tense mystery.

Walter Neff tries to trick the company using his expert knowledge. He helps Phyllis set up a plan involving a train accident. However, a claims manager named Barton Keyes begins to watch them. Keyes is very good at spotting fraud and lies. He notices that the death does not seem right. The movie shows how the characters' choices lead to trouble. Even as they try to hide their secrets, the truth starts to come out.

The movie is based on a book by James M. Cain.

The book was first shared in Liberty magazine in 1936. Many big movie studios wanted to turn the book into a film. However, a group called the Hays Office said the story was too dark. They did not want to make audiences think about crime too much. Finally, Paramount Pictures bought the rights for $15,000. They had to change some parts of the story to follow the rules. This made the movie different from the original book.

Many talented people worked to make this film a success.

Billy Wilder was the director of the movie. Raymond Chandler helped write the script. Chandler was a famous writer who was new to Hollywood at the time. He was paid $750 per week for his work. The film stars Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck. Stanwyck was the highest-paid woman in America back then. The movie was also very successful at awards shows. It received seven nominations for Academy Awards.

This film changed how movies were made in Hollywood.

It helped set the standard for the film noir style. This style often uses dark shadows and moody lighting. You can see this in the way light shines through window blinds. The movie also focuses on how people feel torn between two things. Walter Neff is pulled between his feelings for Phyllis and his loyalty to Keyes. This makes the story feel very human and real. It remains a famous part of movie history today.
