The story begins with a very sad discovery at a large mansion. Police and photographers find the body of a writer named Joe Gillis in a swimming pool. The film then uses a flashback to show how he got there. Joe is a struggling screenwriter who is having a hard time finding work. He meets Norma Desmond, a former star from the silent film era. Norma lives in a huge house and dreams of becoming a star again.

Making the movie was a very careful process for the creators. Director Billy Wilder and his team wanted to tell a story about lost fame. They even tried to adapt a book called The Loved One by Evelyn Waugh. To keep the studio from seeing everything at once, they sent the script in small pieces. This helped them avoid strict rules about what could be said in movies. Wilder and his writers, Charles Brackett and D. M. Marshman Jr., worked hard to build the plot.

Finding the right actors was a big part of the job. Wilder first thought about asking actors like Mae West or Greta Garbo. He also thought about using Marlon Brando for a lead role. Eventually, he chose Gloria Swanson to play Norma Desmond. Swanson was a real star from the silent film era. She was very excited to take the role after working in radio and television. William Holden was chosen to play the writer, Joe Gillis.

This film connects to the real history of Hollywood. The street named Sunset Boulevard has been part of the film world since 1911. During the 1920s, many stars lived in grand houses in that area. The character of Norma Desmond is based on how some real silent film stars lived. Even famous directors like Cecil B. DeMille appear in the movie as themselves. The film shows how the world of movies changes as time goes on.
