Raymond Chandler wrote it in 1939. It is a hardboiled novel. This means it is a tough story. It follows a detective named Philip Marlowe. He works in Los Angeles.

Marlowe is a private investigator. He is often quiet and drinks a lot. The story is very complex. Characters tell secrets and trick one another. The title is a euphemism for death. This is a polite way to talk about dying.

Chandler made the book from older short stories. He combined them to make one big plot. He cared more about the mood than every tiny detail. This made the characters feel very real. The book was very successful. Time magazine put it on a list of the best novels. Le Monde also named it one of the best books of the century.

Many movies were made from the story. One movie came out in 1946. It starred the actor Humphrey Bogart. Another movie was made in 1978. People still love this mystery today.
