These movies became very popular in the 1940s and 1950s. This was their classic period.

Most noir films use black and white colors. They use dark shadows and bright lights. This look came from German Expressionism. This was a way of making art in Germany. Many artists moved to Hollywood to make films. They brought these dark styles with them.

The stories often feel serious or sad. You might see a private investigator. You might see a police officer. Some stories feature a femme fatale. This is a woman who might lead a hero into trouble.

Other stories follow a victim of bad luck.

Experts still argue about these films. Some say noir is a genre. A genre is a specific type of story. Others say it is just a filmmaking style. Some say it is a mood. Even today, new films use these ideas. We call these newer films neo-noir.
