It started in the mid-1970s. Many bands wanted to move away from mainstream rock. They did not like big, fancy music. Instead, they liked a "DIY" way of working. This means "do it yourself."

Many bands made their own records at home. They used small, independent labels to share them.

Punk songs are usually short and very fast. Most bands use just a few instruments. They use guitars, bass, drums, and vocals. The guitars often make a loud, buzzing sound. The singers do not always sing in a pretty way. They might shout or snarl their words. Many lyrics talk about real problems in the world.

Punk also has a very special look. People wear leather jackets and ripped jeans. Some use safety pins to decorate their clothes. This style was meant to shock people. Some fans even dye their hair bright colors. For many, punk is a way to feel free. It helps them show who they really are.
