James Ellroy is a famous American writer. He is known for crime fiction. He writes stories that feel very fast. This is because of his unique style. He uses short, punchy sentences. He often leaves out small connecting words. This way of writing is called telegraphese. He first used this style for his book L.A. Confidential. An editor asked him to make the book shorter. He cut every word he did not need. This created a new and powerful way to tell stories.

Ellroy had a very difficult life growing up. His mother was killed when he was ten. The police never found who did it. This sad event stayed with him for years. He also struggled with being homeless and drinking. He worked as a golf caddie to pay for things. This job gave him time to write. He credits public libraries for helping him learn. He even worked as a clerk at a library. He writes his books by hand on yellow legal pads. He does not use a computer. His books, like The Black Dahlia, are very well known. Some people call him the "Demon dog of American crime fiction."
