Lang used many new ideas in his movies. In his 1929 film Woman in the Moon, he showed a multi-stage rocket. He even helped invent the idea of a rocket launch pad. This was a place where a rocket stands upright before it flies. He also showed a countdown clock for the launch. His science fiction film Metropolis, made in 1927, is very famous. He worked closely with a writer named Thea von Harbou. They wrote many films together during his time in Germany. These included the long film Die Nibelungen in 1924.

Lang's life changed a lot because of history. He studied art in Paris in 1913. During World War I, he served in the Austrian Army. He was wounded four times during the war. One injury caused him to lose sight in his right eye. After the war, he began working in the film industry. He moved to Berlin and worked for companies like UFA. He married the actress Elisabeth Rosenthal in 1919. Later, he married the writer Thea von Harbou. These early years helped him learn how to tell big stories.

In the 1930s, Lang had to leave Germany. He moved to Paris and then to Hollywood. He became a citizen of the United States in 1939. In America, he made twenty-two feature films. He worked at many different movie studios. He made movies like Fury in 1936 and Scarlet Street in 1945. Some of his films had themes about the war. For example, he made Hangmen Also Die! in 1943. He also directed the police drama The Big Heat in 1953. His American movies helped shape the way Hollywood tells stories.

Lang's movies are still studied by people today. His early German films used a style called Expressionism. This style uses shapes and shadows to show feelings. His later American films were often more simple. They sometimes felt cold or very serious. Even when he moved back to Germany later in life, he kept making movies. He directed a version of The Indian Tomb in the 1960s. He passed away in August 1976.
