He was born in Germany in 1888. He loved movies from when he was a small boy. He eventually became a famous maker of silent films. These were movies made before people could hear voices on screen. Many people still study his work today. He helped change how movies look and feel. His ideas helped shape the history of cinema.

Murnau used many special ways to tell his stories.

In his film The Last Laugh, he used a new camera style. This is called the unchained camera technique. It uses moves like pans and tilts to follow the action. He also used a subjective point of view. This means the camera acts like the eyes of a character. This helps the audience feel what the character feels. These tools made his films feel very real and deep.

His career began in Germany after he studied art and literature.

He served in the German army during World War I. He worked as a pilot and survived eight plane crashes. After the war, he started making his own films. His most famous early film was Nosferatu in 1922. It was a story about a vampire named Count Orlok. Even though it had legal problems, it became a famous masterpiece.

In 1926, Murnau moved to Hollywood to work at Fox Studio.

He made a movie called Sunrise in 1927. Many critics call it one of the best films ever made. It won an Oscar for Unique and Artistic Production in 1929. He later traveled to Bora Bora to make a film called Tabu. This was a hard job because he worked with a pioneer named Robert J. Flaherty. Murnau had to finish the film by himself after they had a disagreement.

Murnau's life ended very suddenly in 1931. He died in a hospital in California after a car crash. This happened only one week before his film Tabu opened.
