Orlok is a strange figure with a hooked nose and long nails. He moves from his castle to a town called Wisburg. He arrives on a ship that is filled with rats. These rats bring a plague to the people in the town.

The film was made by a company called Prana Film. It was directed by F. W. Murnau. The screenplay was written by Henrik Galeen.

The movie was not supposed to be an official version of a book. It was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, Dracula. Because of this, the filmmakers changed many names. They called the vampire Count Orlok instead of Count Dracula. They also changed the names of many other characters.

There is a very interesting history behind this film. After it was made, Stoker's widow, Florence, sued the filmmakers. A court ruled that the film violated copyright laws. The court even ordered that all copies of the film be destroyed.

Luckily, several prints survived the order. This allowed the film to become a famous masterpiece. In 2019, the film finally entered the public domain worldwide.

Many people study this film to understand how it was made. Some believe the scary parts come from the director's life. For example, producer Albin Grau served in the army during World War I. He heard a story about a vampire while in Serbia.

The film also uses strange symbols and languages. Orlok and his helper, Knock, use a special language called Enochian. This language was recorded by people in the 16th century. These details make the movie feel very deep and mysterious.
