Anouilh organized his many plays into special groups. He called his sad dramas "pièces noires," or black plays. These stories often had young heroes who stayed true to themselves. He also wrote "pièces roses," or pink plays, which were funny. These pink plays felt like magical fairy tales. Later, he wrote "pièces brillantes," or brilliant plays, which were witty. He even wrote "pièces costumées," or costume plays, which used history as a setting.

As a young boy, he watched many plays from backstage. He even tried writing his own plays when he was only 12. In 1918, his family moved to the big city of Paris. He went to school at the Lycée Chaptal.

His career had many important moments and people. In 1937, he had his first big success with a play called "Traveller Without Luggage." One of his most famous works was "Antigone" in 1944. This play was very important during a hard time in France. Many people thought the play was a way to talk about politics. He also wrote a famous story called "The Lark" about Joan of Arc. He worked with many famous directors like André Barsacq and Louis Jouvet.

Anouilh's life was not always easy or simple. He sometimes had very little money and worked as a copywriter. He also had some difficult times in his own family life. During the war, he stayed in Paris and did not take political sides. This caused some people to argue about his views. Even so, he preferred to keep his private life a secret. He died in 1987 after a long life of making art.
