Georges Bernanos was a famous French writer and a soldier. He was born in Paris on February 20, 1888. Much of his childhood was spent in a village called Fressin. This village was in the Pas-de-Calais region of France. He often used this place as a setting for his stories. His writing is known for being deep and meaningful.

Bernanos lived a very active and sometimes difficult life. He served as a soldier during the First World War. He fought in famous battles at the Somme and Verdun. During these battles, he was wounded several times. After the war, he worked in the insurance business. In 1938, he moved his family to South America. He lived in Barbacena, Brazil, to manage a farm.

As a writer, Bernanos focused on important spiritual themes. His two most famous novels are *Under the Sun of Satan* and *The Diary of a Country Priest*. These books often tell stories about parish priests. These characters work hard to fight evil and sadness. He won the Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française for his 1936 book. Many of his novels are now translated into English.

His political views changed as he watched the world. He was once part of a youth group called the Camelots du Roi. Later, he saw the terrible things happening during the Spanish Civil War. After seeing people in Mallorca, he felt great disgust. He wrote about these feelings in his 1938 book, *A Diary of My Times*. He also strongly supported the Free French led by Charles De Gaulle.

Many artists have used his stories for their own work. A film based on *Under the Sun of Satan* won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1987. His work *Dialogues des Carmélites* became a very famous opera. The composer Francis Poulenc turned it into music for the stage. This opera was first performed at La Scala in Milan in 1957. His stories continue to inspire movies, plays, and music today.
