Georges Bernanos was a famous writer from France. He was born in Paris in 1888. He spent much of his childhood in a village called Fressin. This village became a setting for his stories.

Bernanos was also a soldier. He fought in the First World War. He was wounded several times during the war. Later, he lived in Brazil for many years. He even tried to run a farm there.

He wrote many books that people love. Two of his most famous novels are *Under the Sun of Satan* and *The Diary of a Country Priest*. These stories often feature a priest. The priest works to fight evil and sadness in the world. His books are now read in many places, including Great Britain and the United States.

Many of his stories became movies. One film, based on *Under the Sun of Satan*, won a big prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Another work, *Dialogues des Carmélites*, was even turned into an opera. This shows how his writing moved many different kinds of artists.
