He wrote over 50 different books during his life. These books included many stories and writings about his own life. He was a very important man of letters in his time. In 1947, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature. This is one of the highest honors a writer can receive. People admired him for his many different styles of writing.

Gide's writing often explored how people feel inside. He felt a struggle between two sides of his own personality. One side was very strict and followed religious rules. The other side wanted to explore new and different things. He used his books to talk about being your true self. He wanted people to own their own nature. This was a very brave thing to write about in his time.

His life began in Paris on November 22, 1869. He grew up in a middle-class Protestant family. His father, Jean Paul Guillaume Gide, was a law professor. Sadly, his father died when André was only 11 years old. Gide grew up in a quiet place called Normandy. He started writing books at a very young age. His first novel came out in 1891 when he was 21.

Gide traveled to many far places in the world. He went to North Africa in the 1890s. Later, he traveled through French Equatorial Africa with Marc Allégret. He wrote books about his trips to the Congo. These books showed how unfair rules treated workers there. He also visited the Soviet Union in 1936. He wrote about what he saw during that journey.

Gide's ideas helped many other famous writers later on. Writers like Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre were inspired by him. He also helped refugees during World War I. He worked with a group called the Foyer Franco-Belge. They helped people find food and homes in Paris. Gide spent his whole life looking at the world. He used his words to share what he learned.
