Jean Genet was a famous French writer and political activist. He wrote many kinds of books, like novels, poems, and plays.

His life was full of big changes. In his early years, he was a thief and lived on the streets. He spent time in a penal colony, which is a place for people who break rules. He also spent time in prison. Later, he became a very well-known person in the world of art. His writing often showed the lives of people who lived on the edges of society.

Genet began to write while he was in prison. He wrote his first poem there, called "Le condamné à mort." He also wrote a famous novel called Our Lady of the Flowers in 1944.

A writer named Jean Cocteau helped him get his work published. Cocteau was very important for Genet's career. In 1949, Genet faced a very hard time. He was facing a life sentence in prison. However, famous people like Pablo Picasso and Jean-Paul Sartre helped him. They asked the French President to let him stay free. Because of them, Genet never went back to prison.

As he grew older, Genet used his voice to help others. He was a political activist who cared about fairness. He spoke up for immigrants living in France. In 1970, he went to the United States to visit the Black Panthers. He stayed there for three months to give lectures.

He also visited Palestinian refugee camps near Amman. He spent six months there to see how people lived. These trips moved him very deeply. He wrote a long book about these travels called Prisoner of Love. This book was published after he died.

Genet's plays were very special and often performed in big cities. One of his most famous plays is The Maids. It was first performed in New York City in 1955. Another play, The Blacks, was a huge success in New York too. It ran for 1,408 performances!

Many famous actors were in the cast, like James Earl Jones and Maya Angelou. His plays often used masks and roles to tell stories. They showed how people act when they are playing a part. Some of his plays even talked about the Algerian War of Independence. His work was often bold and made people think a lot.

Many people still talk about Genet's work today. His stories have been turned into movies many times. For example, a director named Rainer Werner Fassbinder made a film called Querelle.

Even famous musicians have been influenced by him. The singer David Bowie even used his name for a song called "The Jean Genie." Genet died in Paris in 1986 from throat cancer. He is buried in a cemetery in Morocco. He remains a very important figure in French history and art.
