He was a novelist, a poet, and an editor. He was also known for his clever wit and humor. Queneau loved to explore new ways to use language. He often looked for connections between writing and math. This unique way of thinking made his work very special. People still study his ideas today.

Queneau used math to create amazing art. He helped start a group called Oulipo in 1960. This group used mathematical rules to write books. One famous book is *A Hundred Thousand Billion Poems*. He wrote 140 lines in 10 different sonnets. These lines can be mixed in any order. Queneau calculated that reading every version would take 190,258,751 years!

His life was full of many different jobs. He was born in Le Havre in 1903. He moved to Paris in 1920 to study philosophy. During the 1920s, he worked as a bank teller and a tutor. He even wrote a column for a newspaper called *L'Intransigeant*. In 1938, he began working for the Gallimard publishing house. He rose to become the director of a famous collection called *l'Encyclopédie de la Pléiade* in 1956.

Queneau also enjoyed playing with how words sound. His novel *Zazie dans le métro* became very popular in 1959.

This book uses words that sound like how people actually talk. It even uses a very long first word: "Doukipudonktan." This is a funny way to write a question in French. He also wrote *Exercises in Style*. This book tells one simple story in 99 different ways.

Many other artists were inspired by his clever ideas. The film movement called the *Nouvelle Vague* used his book *Zazie* in a 1960 movie. Even mathematicians and musicians looked at his work. A composer named José Evangelista wrote music based on his stories. His work shows that writing can be like a game. It can be both a math puzzle and a beautiful story.
