Michel Butor was a very important French writer. He was a poet, a novelist, and an essayist. He also worked as a teacher and an art critic. People often call him an experimental writer. This means he liked to try new ways of telling stories. He was part of a group of writers known as the nouveau roman. Even though many people linked him to this group, Butor often resisted that label. He wanted to be known for his own unique style.

Butor had many different ways of making his art. He wrote books that used very strict patterns. For example, one book used a calendar to organize its parts. Another book used an architectural scheme to build its story. He also made special books called artist's books. These were made by working with other artists like Gérard Serée. He even wrote books that were meant to be heard on the radio. His writing often combined math-like patterns with beautiful, lyrical feelings.

His life began in a suburb of Lille called Mons-en-Barœul. He was the third of seven children in his family. His father, Émile, worked as a railroad inspector. His mother was named Anna. Butor went to the Sorbonne to study philosophy. He graduated from there in 1947. After his studies, he traveled to many different countries. He taught French in Minya, Egypt, from 1950 to 1951.

Butor's career was full of big successes and travels. He won the Prix Fénéon in 1957 for his book L'Emploi du temps. That same year, he won the Prix Renaudot for La Modification. This famous novel was written entirely in the second person. This means the book uses the word "you" for the main character. In 1960, he visited the United States to teach at colleges. He published an experimental book called Mobile in 1962. Later, in 2013, he received the Grand prix de littérature from the Académie française.

Many different people admired his work throughout his life. He was friends with the professor Elinor S. Miller. They worked together on many translations and lectures. He was also part of a group called The Raymond Roussel Society. This group was started in 2016 to study a writer named Raymond Roussel. Other famous people like John Ashbery were also part of this group. Butor died on August 24, 2016, in southeastern France. He left behind a huge collection of poetry, novels, and essays.
