He was an English art critic, a novelist, a painter, and a poet. He spent over fifty years living in France. Berger did not just write stories; he helped people understand how to see. His work often focused on how images and art affect our lives. He believed that looking at things was a way to understand people. This curiosity made him a very important figure in the world of art.

Berger used many different tools to share his ideas. He wrote long books called novels to tell stories about people. He also wrote essays, which are short pieces of writing about a specific topic. Sometimes he worked with others, like the photographer Jean Mohr. Together, they used photographs to document the lives of peasants. He even worked on television shows and films. In 1972, he helped create a famous series called Ways of Seeing. This show used images to teach people about art and advertising.

His journey began in London, where he was born in 1926. His father, Stanley, was an officer in the army during the First World War. John went to school at St Edward's School in Oxford. Later, he served in the British Army from 1944 to 1946. He studied art at the Chelsea School of Art and the Central School of Art and Design. In the late 1940s, he began showing his paintings in London galleries. These early years helped him become a skilled artist and a deep thinker.

Berger achieved many great things during his long career. In 1972, his novel G. won the Booker Prize and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. He used the prize money to help others in a very kind way. He gave half the money to the British Black Panthers. He kept the other half to study migrant workers in his book, A Seventh Man. He also wrote a book called King: A Street Story about a stray dog. His ideas about animals were so good they are still studied by many people today.

Many people still read his books to learn about the world. His ideas about the "male gaze" changed how people look at movies and art. This term helps us notice how women are shown in media. He also helped start a publishing group called the Writers and Readers Publishing Cooperative. Even his voice was used in a video game called Grand Theft Auto: London 1969. When he died in 2017 at age 90, he left behind a huge archive. This collection of his papers is now kept at the British Library.
